The government has ordered an investigation into the Thalang checkpoint volunteer reservists following complaints of extorting money from locals and has vowed to prosecute fully if guilt is proven.
On 20 Sep 2026 GMT+7, Ms. Ploytale Laksamisangchan, Deputy Spokesperson of the Prime Minister’s Office, revealed that following complaints about extortion by the Territorial Defense Volunteers (Reserve) at Thalang District checkpoint in Phuket, which has become a social media issue, Deputy Minister of Interior Pol.Peer Suwanchavee ordered the Phuket Governor and Thalang District Chief to promptly investigate and clarify the facts to the public. This is to ensure orderly operations and restore public confidence. Should the volunteers be found guilty of the alleged behavior, strict action will be taken without leniency, as such conduct is severely detrimental to the agency and sets a bad example. The volunteers’ main role is to assist administrative officers or police in maintaining peace, security, and public safety—not to exploit citizens or seek personal gain.
Regarding developments, the Phuket Governor has ordered the suspension of the volunteer officers under complaint and appointed two new teams totaling about 30 personnel to replace them. This reshuffle is intended to ensure continuous maintenance of order and public safety in the area, as well as proper conduct by the volunteers during the investigation.
As for the complaint investigation, relevant individuals have been summoned to provide statements to confirm the facts related to the allegations. Other witnesses have already been interviewed, leaving only victim testimonies to be collected to complete a comprehensive review. The province is prioritizing thorough examination of all complaints based on facts, evidence, and legal procedures to ensure fairness for all parties involved.
