The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) resolved to indict Somsak Tachai, former Secretary-General of the Social Security Office (SSO), after discovering he had only salary and allowances but possessed abnormal assets amounting to 35 million baht.
On 21 Sep 2026 GMT+7, Surapong Intarathaworn, Secretary-General of the NACC, announced that the commission resolved to indict Somsak Tachai, former Secretary-General of the Committee for the Promotion of Welfare and Well-being of Teachers and Educational Personnel (SSO), for unexplained wealth totaling 35,991,076 baht. Investigations found that while Somsak served as Deputy Secretary-General of the SSO from 17 Nov 2008 to 3 Jul 2012 and as Secretary-General from 1 Oct 2012 to 28 May 2015, he and his spouse declared income only from salary and allowances totaling 16,488,873 baht in personal income tax returns (Form P.N.D.91) from tax years 2009 to 2015. No other income was declared. However, they held unexplained assets under their names and that of their minor children—17 items totaling 35,991,076 baht—with no lawful justification, detailed as follows.
1. Bank deposits in Somsak's name: one account totaling 3.91 million baht; in spouse's name: two accounts totaling 5.7 million baht.
2. Land and buildings: four items registered to Somsak and spouse valued at 5.5 million baht; two items registered to their minor children valued at 19,629,100 baht.
3. Payments made to settle a special loan from the Chiang Mai Teachers’ Savings Cooperative in spouse's name totaling 1,251,976 baht.
After consideration, the NACC concluded that Somsak possessed unexplained wealth totaling 35,991,076 baht without legal justification. The case was forwarded to the Attorney General to file a petition at the Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases to have the assets forfeited to the state. Additionally, the ruling was sent to his superiors to order his dismissal within 60 days of notification.
