At 09:45 on 30 Sep 2026 GMT+7, Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, gave an interview at the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) addressing whether Bangkok's flood relief funds are sufficient and how many people will receive aid. He said Bangkok follows DDPM's 7-8 item criteria, with 5 items funded by the government for house repairs based on actual damage. Bangkok adds 2 items, including rent costs paid by the city administration, which must be approved by the Bangkok Council if not covered. Payments are not flat per person but based on actual claims requiring documentation.
Currently, an online platform is being developed for citizens to conveniently submit photo evidence digitally. The latest compensation from DDPM was over 200 million baht in 2022 for flooding in Lat Krabang, with DDPM disbursing funds under disaster budget regulations.
When asked if there is a payment total yet, Chadchart said no, data collection is ongoing to assess actual damage and required repairs with photo evidence to submit to DDPM. Regarding the 9,000 baht per family compensation, he confirmed this is government-funded, not from Bangkok.
Asked if funds will come from multiple sources, Chadchart said compensation depends on damage, echoing the Prime Minister that not everyone receives aid. For example, those severely affected might only get 9,000 baht. He emphasized payments follow existing criteria, not new rules. On how long payments take after flooding recedes, he admitted it won’t be fast due to careful budget verification, which has historically taken time.
Regarding the 9,000 baht government compensation as emotional relief and Bangkok's repair funds as a separate amount, Chadchart explained there are two parts: damage payments per DDPM regulations, such as house repairs, and additional government payments under different criteria, similar to the Chiang Rai flood case where cleaning funds were separate from existing categories. Duplicate claims under the same category are not allowed, so any extra government aid must differ from DDPM categories. Bangkok’s budget is limited and may only partially assist; if the government requests support, Bangkok will supplement DDPM-regulated funds.
When asked about disaster insurance eligibility for Bangkok residents, Chadchart said he needs to review details as he just saw the news yesterday and does not yet know if Bangkok residents are included.
