OBEC accelerates assistance to flood-affected schools with a 20-million-baht budget to restore damage and ensure student safety.
On 30 Sep 2026 GMT+7, Dr. Pichet Pho Phakdee, Secretary-General of the Basic Education Commission, and Dr. Phuthon Chanthahong Punyajorasthamrong, Deputy Secretary-General, reported that flooding in several parts of the country has impacted OBEC-affiliated schools, damaging school buildings, auxiliary structures, equipment, teaching materials, and the school environment. OBEC is urgently working to assist and restore affected schools so they can resume normal teaching and learning as soon as possible.
OBEC has responded to the policy of Mr. Prasert Chanruangthong, Minister of Education, and Mr. Akkaranan Kankittinan, Deputy Minister of Education and Director of the Center for Rights, Freedoms, and Safety Protection, coordinating with the Policy and Planning Office and the Finance and Assets Office to allocate and transfer over 20 million baht to affected schools nationwide under its jurisdiction.
This budget will be used to improve, repair, and restore flood damage to school buildings, auxiliary structures, equipment, and teaching materials, as well as to ensure the school environment is safe and ready for use promptly.
Beyond budget allocation for restoration, OBEC also prioritizes the care of students, teachers, and educational personnel in flood-affected areas. Schools have been instructed to closely monitor the situation and continuously assess school readiness. If an area remains unsafe, schools should adapt teaching methods appropriately to minimize the impact on students’ learning.
Additionally, education area offices and schools will continuously track and report damage, especially after water levels recede, to plan restoration tailored to each area’s conditions. This includes inspections of buildings, electrical systems, equipment, and the environment before students resume regular classes.
OBEC will promptly provide assistance to schools affected by flooding, prioritizing the safety of students and staff while minimizing disruptions to learning, to ensure schools can quickly become safe spaces and return to normal teaching.
