Large Drainage Pipes Effective: Ministry of Interior Reveals Khlong Chan Housing Floodwaters Have Dropped Over 40 cm, Residents Can Return

Large drainage pipes have proven effective. The Ministry of Interior's Deputy Minister revealed that floodwaters at Khlong Chan Housing have dropped by over 40 cm, allowing residents to re-enter the area. Plans are being adjusted to bring smaller pumps into the site, with preparations to coordinate with Bangkok authorities to deploy drainage pipes in Lat Krabang.

At 08:40 on 1 October 2026 at the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Mr. Worasit Liangprasit, Deputy Minister of the Interior, reported progress in urgently pumping water out of the Khlong Chan Housing area using large water pipes (known as "Phaya Naga pipes" or "fast pipes"). He said the water has significantly decreased, most areas are now accessible by pickup trucks, and residents can walk in. Moving forward, the plan will be adjusted to simplify operations and suit conditions better. Although water levels would normally drop faster, water flowing back from the Lam Phung Phuay retention basin has delayed the decline. Overall, the situation is improving.

Mr. Worasit added that the water level has dropped by an average of about 30-40 centimeters. The installed pumps are large, about 15-18 inches in diameter, but as water recedes, such large pumps become less effective. Therefore, coordination with Bangkok will bring smaller pumps into the area. Currently, there is no need to keep large pumps operating at Khlong Chan Housing.

He further stated that the large pumps will be assessed to determine if they can be used next in Lat Krabang. If the water levels in nearby canals are comparable and pumping is feasible, the pumps will be relocated there with planning alongside Bangkok authorities.

The large Phaya Naga water pumps, with 15-inch pipes, have been supported by private sector networks in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, including Mr. Songpol Suksomboon, known as MP Beer, MP for District 1 of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya. Additional support has come from related agencies and the Royal Irrigation Department to enhance drainage efficiency in the area.
