Irrigation Department Accelerates Water Discharge from Eastern Chao Phraya Basin to the Gulf of Thailand to Manage Incoming Upper Basin Water

The Royal Irrigation Department is accelerating the discharge of water from the eastern Chao Phraya basin into the Gulf of Thailand to accommodate water flowing from the upper areas and to minimize the impact on the public as much as possible.

On 3 Oct 2026 GMT+7, Mr. Wittaya Kaewmee, Director-General of the Royal Irrigation Department, along with department executives and officials, visited the Suvarnabhumi Pumping Station in Samut Prakan Province to monitor the water situation in the eastern Chao Phraya basin.

Mr. Wittaya ordered continuous management and discharge of water to accommodate incoming flows from the upper basin and reduce impacts on the public as quickly as possible. The Royal Irrigation Department is utilizing the entire irrigation system in the eastern lower Chao Phraya basin—including water gates, pumping stations, and drainage canals—to expedite pushing water from upper and central areas down to the lower basin and out to the Gulf of Thailand. Since 25 September, over 482 million cubic meters of water have been discharged.

Mr. Wittaya emphasized that the Royal Irrigation Department will continue to release water steadily to prepare for additional inflows from the upper basin and minimize impacts on the public. They are closely monitoring the water situation and ready to adjust discharge plans to suit the evolving conditions at all times.
