Peoples Party Questions Governments Failure in Managing Bang Pakong Water Diversion Je Setth Retorts to Stop Creating Rhetoric

The People's Party raised a question accusing the government of failing in diverting water from the Bang Pakong River due to mismanagement, mocking "Father Thep" for paying more attention to attending "Teacher Navin's" birthday than visiting flood-affected areas. In response, "Je Setth" retorted, urging to stop creating rhetoric and sarcastic remarks.

At 11:10 a.m. on 8 Oct 2026 at the Parliament, the House of Representatives convened with Sopon Sarum, Speaker of the House, presiding. Veerayuth Kanchuchat, a list MP from the People's Party, posed a live question to the Prime Minister about flood management and recovery plans in the Bang Pakong River basin, the hardest-hit area currently. He criticized the lack of water drainage planning and warning systems. He asked what percentage of the flood damage was due to natural causes and what percentage resulted from government mismanagement, stating that failure to answer would mean 100% mismanagement. He praised "Son Thep" for actively working on the ground more than "Father Thep," accusing the Prime Minister of attending Navin Chidchob's birthday on 4 Oct during severe flooding for half a day but spending only 30 minutes inspecting floods in Prachinburi. He inquired about preparations for the second phase of flooding in October, including the number of people targeted for evacuation and the number of evacuation centers. He asked if water levels in the Bang Pakong basin would decrease 38 days before 13 Nov, and requested clarity on the disaster insurance policy details and livestock compensation criteria, questioning if it would follow previous standards for farmers with up to 10 pigs, 5 cows, and rice fields compensated at 2,240 baht per rai.

Je Setth Thaiset, Deputy Minister of Interior, responded on behalf of the Prime Minister, stating it was impossible to specify what percentage of the flooding was due to natural disaster or government failure. He explained that no expert in Thailand or globally could predict rainfall one to two months in advance because rainfall patterns evolve as part of natural disaster dynamics. Regarding the October second phase evacuation figures, he said future targets could not yet be provided, only past situation data. He assured that evacuation centers were prepared with food, medicine, medical supplies, and essential items fully stocked. About the Bang Pakong basin,

he expected water conditions to normalize between 13-15 Nov if no additional rain fell. He said he answered the question live hoping to hear useful opinions and recommendations from members who had visited the affected areas and listened to people's problems to help solve them. He did not expect to face rhetoric about "Son Thep" attending a birthday, questioning the purpose of such remarks in the current situation. He said if it were not for the present circumstances, he would not listen to such irrelevant issues. He wanted to hear substantive content about what the people needed from the field visits and asked that rhetorical and sarcastic comments be separated out. He welcomed constructive advice and was ready to listen.
