PM Discusses with OECD Secretary-General, Confident Thailand Is on the Right Path to Join as Member by 2028 and Advance to Developed Nation Status

The Prime Minister discussed with the OECD Secretary-General, confident that Thailand is on the right track, ready to join as a member in 2028, and elevate itself to a developed country, transitioning leadership to a new generation.

At 09:45 on 16 Oct 2026 GMT+7, at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul met with Mr. Mathias Cormann, Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Afterwards, Anutin said that Mathias attended the World Bank meeting and delivered a keynote speech expressing OECD’s admiration and confidence in Thailand’s preparedness. "We are about to become an OECD member; all documentation and meetings have gone smoothly. We had a chance to meet today, and he reassured us that we are on the right path. The cooperation between the Thai government and OECD is proceeding as planned. We must support each other. Thailand’s accession to OECD will be a success for the OECD Secretariat and will benefit both Thailand and the world. Our country upholds standards in all operations—not only in governance or strict regulations—but this will enhance trade capabilities, financial systems, and build confidence for those conducting transactions with Thailand. Simply put, if we join OECD, we will no longer be a developing country but will be classified as developed, raising our foundational infrastructure and advancing the country to the next level, which is inevitable."

When asked if OECD requested any further improvements, Anutin replied that he asked them, and they said Thailand is already on the right track without specifying any deficiencies, which is encouraging for those working on this. The OECD preparation is not by one office alone but involves the entire government, with documents filling a room, showing dedication from all agencies. It is not merely a duty or responsibility but a necessary effort to ensure Thailand is handed over safely to the next generation for continued progress. Those of us who are older can be confident that the country is transitioning to young leadership with safety and improved quality of life. Asked if the target to join OECD by 2028 remains on schedule, Anutin said the OECD Secretary-General wants to complete it, and their positions align as long as both remain in office. For people who have just met twice, such words are positive and a good sign. It’s not that he is overstepping to help us, but it supports our hardworking team who are on the right path, not lost or needing to fix anything later. On 23-24 Nov 2026, the OECD Secretary-General will attend a concluding meeting, providing another opportunity for discussion.
