Finance Secretary Affirms Thailand’s Strong Fiscal Position, No Welfare Cuts, Avoids France’s Path

The Finance Ministry Secretary guarantees that Thailand will not follow France's example, affirming there will be no cuts to public welfare. He highlighted the strong fiscal position and high buffers, and noted plans to push the “Solar Rooftop” project for Cabinet consideration this month.

On 21 Oct 2026 GMT+7, Mr. Lawaron Saengsanit, Finance Ministry Secretary, addressed concerns about France’s severe protests linked to economic problems, rising public debt, and budget deficits, questioning whether Thailand might be affected. He stated that Thailand’s fiscal status differs entirely from France’s. Currently, Thailand maintains a high fiscal buffer and the government strictly follows financial discipline policies, prioritized by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Mr. Akeniti Nitithanprapas.

The protests abroad stemmed from direct cuts to budgets serving the public or reductions in government service quality. In contrast, Thailand assures no welfare cuts will occur. The government plans to maintain the current budget level for public care but will focus on controlling leakage and eliminating unnecessary expenditures instead.

Furthermore, Thailand’s fiscal strength is confirmed by the three major global credit rating agencies, which continue to trust Thailand’s economy and fiscal stability. This confidence results from ongoing financial discipline leading to improved credit ratings.

“The issue of accumulated debt has developed over a long time and requires careful management. This government’s principle is clear: avoid new debt unless necessary. If borrowing is needed, it is not the main problem; the key is to invest funds in projects that truly benefit, are worthwhile, and enhance the country’s efficiency,” Mr. Lawaron stated.

Regarding progress on the solar rooftop installation project to help reduce energy costs for households, the project screening subcommittee has met continuously over the past 3–4 days. Additional meetings are being held to prepare the proposal for Cabinet submission, focusing on integration with smart systems for maximum efficiency. The project has passed 2–3 rounds of subcommittee review and is expected to be presented to the Cabinet for approval within this month.

On the issue of increasing import tax on electric vehicles (EVs), the Finance Secretary said that preparations are underway to submit the matter for consideration. The final decision awaits clarity and approval from the Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister.
