Attawit Urges Parliament to Push Bangkok to Improve Nong Bon Canal After 2024 Budget Passed but Construction Yet to Start

Attawit calls on parliament to urge the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to improve the Nong Bon Canal after the 2024 budget was approved long ago, but BMA has yet to start construction. He points out that water drainage into Nong Bon Pond is not operating at full capacity, causing severe flooding in eastern Bangkok.

On 21 October 2026, Attawit Suwanpakdee, party-list MP from the Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party, addressed the House of Representatives, requesting the Speaker to send a message to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to urgently improve the upper Nong Bon Canal, which receives water from the Prawet Burirom Canal. This canal serves as the waterway into Nong Bon Pond, which has a capacity of 5 million cubic meters and can support drainage from Srinakarin Road, Prawet District, and Saphan Sung District. Attawit noted that flooding problems in eastern Bangkok, especially in Muang Thong and Phasuk villages in Prawet, as well as in the athletes' village and Krungthep Kreetha area in Saphan Sung, partly stem from limited water flow into Nong Bon Pond because the upper Nong Bon Canal banks have not been improved. Meanwhile, the drainage system from the pond, including canals and tunnels, functions well, making the main issue the water inflow route into the pond.

"The parliament approved the 2024 budget three years ago, and we are now into the 2027 fiscal year. The budget for constructing a reinforced concrete embankment along approximately 5,800 meters of Nong Bon Canal totals 444.8 million baht, with 70% funded by the government subsidy and 30% by BMA. The canal banks remain natural soil, limiting water conveyance capacity. Therefore, I request the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to clarify the reasons for the delay and to accelerate the project to enhance drainage efficiency and concretely alleviate flooding problems in eastern Bangkok," Attawit said.
