Government Revamps Udon Thani World Horticultural Expo, Establishes New Landmark

The government is overhauling the Udon Thani World Horticultural Expo, establishing a new landmark that aims to attract 3.6 million tourists and generate more than 20 billion baht, thereby supporting the local economy.

On 28 Oct 2026, Captain Patdarasmi Thongsaluaikorn, Deputy Spokesperson of the Office of the Prime Minister, revealed that the government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, is advancing preparations for the Udon Thani World Horticultural Expo (Udon Thani Expo 2026), scheduled from 1 November 2026 to 14 March 2027. The goal is to host an international-standard event that creates economic opportunities for the public and promotes Thailand as a tourism destination and an agricultural powerhouse.

The event is expected to draw over 3.6 million visitors, generate economic value exceeding 20 billion baht, create more than 81,000 jobs, and yield tax revenues of over 7.7 billion baht for the government. Local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, transportation providers, and entrepreneurs will benefit from increased income opportunities. Additionally, preparations to accommodate tourists will help improve infrastructure and the quality of life in Udon Thani province and nearby areas.

The additional budget of 250 million baht, or a 10% increase from the total 2.5 billion baht budget, responds to recommendations by the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH), which granted Thailand the rights to host the event and inspected progress in December 2025. At that time, the project was 40% complete, and the association identified areas needing improvement to meet event standards. Consequently, the event's steering committee resolved to increase funding to enhance readiness.

Beyond economic benefits, the expo offers Thailand a platform to showcase its biodiversity and agricultural innovations internationally, while expanding green space in Udon Thani and upper northeastern Thailand. The government plans to develop the site post-event into an international convention center, exhibition space for agricultural products and innovations, permanent public park, and eco-tourism attraction within the Greater Mekong Subregion. It will support restoration and maintenance efforts before proposing to the Cabinet that management be transferred to the Udon Thani Provincial Administrative Organization.

The Deputy Spokesperson of the Office of the Prime Minister encouraged the public to follow and visit the Udon Thani World Horticultural Expo to experience the diversity of plants and Thailand's agricultural advancements, while supporting local tourism and businesses. This support aims to ensure the event brings lasting benefits to Udon Thani province and the northeastern region.

Ms. Ploytale Laksamee Saengchan, Deputy Spokesperson of the Office of the Prime Minister, confirmed transport system readiness. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Pipat Ratchakitprakarn has instructed agencies under the Ministry of Transport to integrate land, rail, and air transport systems to accommodate citizens and tourists attending the expo. The focus is on seamless, fast, and safe connections from airports, train stations, and bus terminals to the event venue, leveraging the international event to boost the economy and tourism in northeastern Thailand.

Coordination has been established among Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (C.I.Q.) agencies to facilitate international flights. Additionally, public transport services, tour group pick-up and drop-off points, and connections between the airport, bus terminals, Udon Thani World Horticultural Expo temporary train station at Nong Daet, and event site have been arranged. Travel between provinces and to Vientiane, Lao People's Democratic Republic, is also coordinated. Road expansion projects at the airport's outbound entrance are being expedited as planned to accommodate increased traffic during the event.

"The government prioritizes the 2026 Udon Thani World Horticultural Expo, emphasizing the integration of all transport networks to ensure convenient and safe travel for visitors during the event. Efficient land transport connections will distribute economic opportunities to hotels, restaurants, service businesses, and local entrepreneurs while facilitating participant convenience, reducing private car use, and easing traffic congestion," Ms. Ploytale stated.
