The government invites people to visit the “Udon Thani International Horticultural Expo 2026,” featuring the grandeur of 32 international gardens and over 1 million plants, along with cultural performances welcoming visitors worldwide on 1 November. The event is expected to generate 20 billion baht in economic activity.
On 31 October 2026, Second Lieutenant Phatdarasmit Thongsaluaykorn, Deputy Spokesperson of the Prime Minister’s Office, announced that the government is preparing to welcome tourists worldwide to the “Udon Thani International Horticultural Expo 2026.” This marks the first international horticultural expo in the Northeast region and offers Thailand a significant opportunity to showcase its agricultural, tourism, and cultural strengths on a global stage. The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Department of Agriculture, Udon Thani province, and domestic and international partners have collaborated to prepare the event on over 1,030 rai at the Nong Daet wetland area in Udon Thani, running from 1 November 2026 to 14 March 2027, a total of 134 days, under the theme “The Diversity of Life: Connections Among People, Water, and Plants for Sustainable Living.”
A major highlight of the expo is the gathering of 32 international gardens from 17 countries and 2 international organizations, along with 16 gardens from Thai public and private agencies, allowing visitors to experience the beauty of plants and garden art from diverse cultures in one place. Additionally, there will be more than 50 plant display gardens featuring rare and notable species worldwide, such as the giant kapok garden from South America, giant date palm garden, variegated baobab garden, olive garden, and uniquely shaped bonsai from China. Over 1 million flowering and ornamental plants will rotate throughout the event, ensuring colorful and varied displays at different times.
The expo offers continuous opportunities to walk, explore, and learn along the route, including greenhouses, ornamental plant and orchid houses, lotus gardens, desert plant gardens, modern agricultural technology exhibitions, and contests across seven plant categories. There will also be national and international academic conferences sharing knowledge on horticulture and agricultural innovations for close public engagement.
One distinctive feature of this event is the integration of Isan wisdom and culture with contemporary architectural design, such as the information building shaped like a jar inspired by Ban Chiang pottery and fish traps, the administration building shaped like a traditional silo, and greenhouses adapted from traditional twin houses. An Isan village will replicate traditional homes and lifestyles, allowing visitors to closely experience the charm of the Isan region.
For those who enjoy local culture and activities, the expo offers over 200 cultural performances at the Tum Hom Plaza throughout the 134 days, alongside exhibitions and activities honoring royal agricultural projects. Additionally, the “Riverside Community Market” features 50 local vendors offering regional foods, agricultural products, and community-made goods, providing business and community members opportunities to generate income from welcoming tourists.
The Deputy Spokesperson further stated that hosting this international horticultural expo is not only an opportunity for Thailand to welcome visitors from many countries but also a driver for the economy and tourism in Udon Thani and the Northeast region. The goal is to attract over 3.6 million visitors and generate an economic turnover exceeding 20 billion baht, benefiting sectors including hotels, restaurants, transportation, agricultural products, and community goods. This supports local entrepreneurs and helps position Udon Thani as an international tourist destination and an economic and tourism hub in the Greater Mekong Subregion.
At the same time, the event emphasizes environmental care and wetland ecosystem management at Nong Daet, with systematic resource and waste management. The expo follows ISO 20121 and ESG guidelines and holds a Carbon Neutral Self-Declaration certification. After the event, there are plans to develop the site into a learning center for horticulture and biodiversity, an ecological study area, and a public park for continued community use.
The Deputy Spokesperson invites the public to be part of this important international event in Thailand—to enjoy the beauty of gardens from around the world, experience rare plants, and discover the charm of Udon Thani together. Visitors can attend from 1 November 2026 to 14 March 2027, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Nong Daet wetland area, Udon Thani.
