National Security Secretary Ready to Handle Thai-Myanmar Border Incident, Concerned About Misfired Gunshots Crossing into Thailand

The National Security Council Secretary-General revealed that the military is ready to handle the Thai-Myanmar border situation, having sent official protest letters at all levels. He confirmed good cooperation and ordered preventive measures due to concerns that mis-angled gunfire could cause bullets to cross into Thai territory.

At 08:45 on 3 November 2026 at the Monthathip Convention Center, General Chaipruk Duangprapat, Secretary-General of the National Security Council (NSC), spoke about the Thai-Myanmar border situation when asked if there was any special surveillance. He said Myanmar has problematic areas, notably Myawaddy District opposite Mae Sot District, Tak Province. The military has followed procedures accordingly. At every level when incidents occur, the NSC emphasizes resolutions to local units on required actions. The military has prepared to deploy personnel and weaponry into the area.

Regarding negotiations or sending protest letters, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thai military, and NSC have already notified Myanmar authorities that such situations should not occur. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior has begun addressing damages caused to the affected border communities.

At the same time, measures are in place to engage Myanmar authorities, including preparation of evacuation plans to swiftly respond to any emergency in high-risk areas.

When asked about measures if Myanmar authorities do not comply with the protest letters, General Chaipruk said that Supreme Commander General Ukrit Boontanon invited the Myanmar military attaché, who has promised to take action.

Asked whether Myanmar would cooperate, General Chaipruk stated they have been cooperative, but all operating units must be cautious because using weapons carries risk. Even a one-millimeter or one-degree deviation in gunfire angle could cause bullets to stray into Thailand. The military has ordered measures to intercept such incidents.

General Chaipruk was also asked about Cambodian soldiers climbing the cliff at Hill 642, Chong Phralai, Sao Thong Chai Subdistrict, Kantharalak District, Sisaket Province, and whether the NSC should implement additional measures.

General Chaipruk said not at this time; it seems to be a local matter. However, if reports indicate a need for higher-level measures, the NSC will take appropriate action.
