Khon Kaen Geopark Approved by UNESCO Global Geoparks Council, Poised to Become Thailands Third UNESCO Global Geopark

Suchart announced good news that "Khon Kaen Geopark" has passed the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council and is preparing to become Thailand's third UNESCO Global Geopark. Official certification is pending in April 2027. He praised the Khon Kaen Provincial Administrative Organization and the Department of Mineral Resources for their joint efforts.

3 Nov 2026 GMT+7 Mr. Suchart Chomklin, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, revealed that he received good news from the 11th UNESCO Global Geoparks Council Meeting, where it was approved to propose "Khon Kaen Geopark" for designation as a UNESCO Global Geopark. The next step is formal certification by the UNESCO Executive Board in April 2027. If certified, Thailand will have three UNESCO Global Geoparks, joining Satun and Korat Global Geoparks.

Mr. Suchart added that this success is due to collaboration among all sectors, especially the Khon Kaen Provincial Administrative Organization, which has continuously driven and supported the management of Khon Kaen Geopark. The Department of Mineral Resources has provided academic support, geological heritage conservation, and development of the geopark to international standards. UNESCO praised Khon Kaen Geopark’s autonomous management structure and strong backing from the Provincial Administrative Organization. Ms. Jitlada Janhaem, Thailand’s Deputy Permanent Representative to UNESCO, represented Thailand in expressing thanks at the meeting.

"This is a significant step for Thailand in elevating its geological heritage to the global stage, especially the valuable dinosaur fossil sites and geological resources in Khon Kaen Province. I commend the Khon Kaen Provincial Administrative Organization, the Department of Mineral Resources, and all involved parties for their efforts in this achievement, which will be an important opportunity to promote tourism, generate community income, and develop the local economy sustainably."
