NOAA Images Show Severe Geomagnetic Storm Hits North America

The Thai Astronomical Society revealed images from NOAA showing the impact of a very severe geomagnetic storm (G4) fully striking the North American continent, confirming no effect on people living in Thailand.

On 20 Jan 2026 GMT+7, reporters noted that the Thai Astronomical Society posted on Facebook that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued a warning today about a radiation storm that is the third strongest since records began in 1976, but it poses no threat to people residing in Thailand.

They also shared images from NOAA depicting the impact of the very severe geomagnetic storm (G4) hitting North America directly.

The impacts of the very severe geomagnetic storm (G4) include: 1. Auroras visible down to magnetic latitude 45 degrees; 2. Possible widespread damage to voltage control systems; 3. Spacecraft surface charging leading to communication and navigation issues; 4. Induced currents in pipelines; 5. Intermittent disruptions to high-frequency radio communications.

This geomagnetic storm resulted from a powerful X1.95-class solar flare on 18 Jan 2026 GMT+7, which also sent a coronal mass ejection traveling at over 1,000 kilometers per second towards Earth.
