On 23 Jan 2026, the Facebook pageof the Department of Disease Control, Ministry of Public Health,posted that the Department of Disease Control is closely monitoring the 'Nipah virus' in India and is accelerating coordination with the One Health network to prevent outbreaks.
It provided information that the 'Nipah virus' is one of three dangerous communicable diseases under the 2015 Dangerous Communicable Disease Act. It is a zoonotic disease caused by contact with animal excrement and secretions from carrier animals such as fruit bats or pigs, horses, cats, goats, and sheep that have contracted the virus from fruit bats.
Symptoms: Initially, symptoms resemble the common cold but may develop complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis, which can be fatal if treatment is delayed.
Transmission: Person-to-person transmission occurs through contact with secretions such as blood or saliva from infected individuals.
Prevention: Wash hands with soap after contact with animals, especially 'fruit bats.'
Currently, Thailand has no reported cases of Nipah virus infection.
