Department of Rural Roads Clarifies Issue of Fire at Bhumibol Bridge 2 Pier: Damage Costs Not as High as 15 Million Baht

The Department of Rural Roads clarifies the case of the "fire at the Bhumibol Bridge pier," affirming that the structure remains fully functional. Regarding the perpetrators, legal action is ongoing. Furthermore, repair costs are not as high as 15 million baht.

Regarding the fire that broke out at the base of a pier of Bhumibol Bridge 2 on the Pu Chao Saming Phrai side, Bang Yha Phraek Subdistrict, Phra Pradaeng District, Samut Prakan Province, on the evening of 15 January 2026, the fire spread to the bridge's drainage pipes, causing intense flames that reached over 50 meters high beneath the upper bridge beams. Authorities coordinated to deploy a high-lift fire truck to spray water from above, taking over an hour to extinguish the fire.

Recently, the Facebook page of the Department of Rural Roads posted a statement addressing the information circulated on social media regarding the "fire at the Bhumibol Bridge pier."

In summary, according to the crane service provider involved in repairs, the parents of the child involved are fully responsible and are currently in custody. The estimated damage is around 15 million baht, including a 30-ton crane rental costing 13,000 baht per day and approximately two-thirds of the concrete beneath the fire-damaged area lost (based on the crane provider’s account at the scene).

The Department of Rural Roads would like to clarify that only a portion of the concrete surface directly affected by the fire was damaged. The concrete beneath the peeled area still meets the designed compressive strength, so the structure remains fully operational. The perpetrators are currently subject to legal proceedings. Additionally, the repair costs are not as high as reported in the news; an assessment is underway, and repairs are in progress.
