Bangkok Breath Council Issues Statement Demanding Action Over Burning of Over 13,000 Rai of Rice Fields Affecting Bangkok and Surrounding Areas

The Bangkok Breath Council issued a statement calling for action following the illegal burning of over 13,000 rai of rice fields in Nakhon Nayok Province. The resulting smoke and dust have spread across Bangkok, affecting the public, particularly vulnerable groups.

On 28 Jan 2026, reports stated that the Bangkok Breath Council expressed concern over the agricultural fires in Nakhon Nayok Province at 22:19 on 27 Jan.

The council stated it is deeply concerned about the fires in rice fields in Nakhon Nayok on 27 Jan, where abnormal hotspots were detected over a wide area exceeding 13,000 rai. The fires appear to be coordinated with simultaneous ignition points. Currently, the situation shows no signs of being easily resolved.

Seasonal weather conditions, with northeast winds blowing toward central Thailand, have caused smoke from the fires to move directly into Bangkok and its metropolitan area. These are downwind areas with low air circulation during this period.

This situation severely impacts public health, especially affecting "vulnerable groups" numbering in the hundreds of thousands, including:

  • Children and youth,
  • Pregnant women and the elderly,
  • Patients with respiratory diseases and people with disabilities,
  • Those who must work or live outdoors,

As well as millions of others who have no access to clean air and must inevitably face air pollution.

The Bangkok Breath Council calls on and supports all relevant agencies to urgently cooperate to suppress both the "field fires" that are spreading, and the "fires of conflict" that may be the root cause of the problem, to extinguish them as soon as possible, restoring clean air and good health to the people.
