In the case of an armed assailant who entered Patong Prathan Khiriwat School in Patong Subdistrict, Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province, on 11 Feb 2016, shooting and injuring people inside and taking students hostage, Principal Sasiphat Sinsomros was severely wounded and later died after negotiating and offering herself as a hostage to protect the students, as previously reported.
Most recently, on 12 Feb 2016, the Teachers' Council announced the awarding ofthe "Teacher of Merit" awardto honor Principal Sasiphat Sinsomros, the principal of Patong Prathan Khiriwat School, for her dedicated, selfless service, professional ideals, and spirit of love and faith in her profession, as demonstrated during the armed attack at Patong Prathan Khiriwat School in Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province.
The "Teacher of Merit" awardis granted to recognize and honor teachers who show selflessness and professional ideals. Administered by the Teachers' Council, it is awarded to those who perform their duties with dedication and sacrifice, possessing a spirit of love and faith in their profession that is clearly evident. Recipients work in both public and private education sectors, serving as exemplary models in conduct, speech, and mind to fellow teachers and students, gaining respect and esteem from learners, colleagues, and society.
Recipients must serve in areas with linguistic and cultural diversity, or in hazardous or remote locations, showing sacrifice and perseverance. They must have consistently exemplary achievements or may be individuals injured, who lost organs, or died in the line of duty or special missions as ordered, where such outcomes were not due to negligence or their own fault.
