Honoring "Nong Paeng" A first-year student donated her heart, liver, kidneys, and eyes in a final great act of merit to save the lives of others.
On 6 March 2026, Mahasarakham Hospital posted a deeply heartfelt tribute, praising the immense sacrifice of Ms. Praveena Somporn, a 20-year-old first-year student in the Bachelor of Music program at the College of Music, Mahasarakham University. She gave the gift of life to others by donating her heart, liver, kidneys, and eyes. She was the fourth organ donor in fiscal year 2026 and the hospital's first successful heart donor.
Nong Paeng suffered a traffic accident on 4 March 2026, resulting in brain hemorrhage. Her condition was critical, and she did not respond to treatment. Physicians provided full care and thoroughly explained her condition and prognosis to her family, who understood the situation.
Later, the Transplant Coordinator Nurse (TCN) team discussed organ and eye donation with the family, who consented with great compassion. Coordination with the Thai Red Cross assessed which organs could help others, confirming that the heart, liver, kidneys, and two eyes were viable for donation.
The organ retrieval surgery took place on 6 March 2026 at 09:30 AM, involving collaboration among medical teams from several institutions: the heart surgery team from Ramathibodi Hospital, the liver and kidney surgery team from Srinagarind Hospital, and the eye retrieval team from Mahasarakham Hospital.
This operation marked the first heart donor surgery intended for transplant in Mahasarakham Province. It succeeded through the cooperation of many units including doctors, nurses, operating room and anesthesia staff, organ and eye transport teams, and traffic police who facilitated a convoy to the airport to ensure timely delivery to patients awaiting transplantation at Ramathibodi Hospital. Arrangements were also made to return the donor’s body to her hometown in Ubon Ratchathani Province.
The donor family’s decision is like giving new life to many patients. It represents a profound sacrifice reflecting the true values of compassion, love, and generosity toward fellow humans.
