Reporters say West Texas Intermediate crude oil prices rose 6.5% to $91.58 per barrel after reports that two international oil tankers were attacked in the northern Persian Gulf near Iraq and Kuwait. Intelligence sources claimed Iran was behind the attacks.
Meanwhile, in the Asian trading market, Brent crude oil prices surged nearly 9%, surpassing $100 per barrel, approximately 3,200 THB per barrel, despite 32 member countries of the International Energy Agency (IEA) affirming plans to release a total of 400 million barrels of emergency oil reserves to ease supply concerns. This emergency release is more than double the 182 million barrels released during Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
A spokesperson for Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that oil prices could rise to $200 per barrel (about 6,400 THB) as Iran prepares to intensify attacks on oil transport ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route that accounts for about one-fifth of global energy exports. The spokesperson warned that no country can intervene to lower oil prices.
