The Epidemiology Division revealed that the COVID-19 situation in Thailand remains at a normal level with no detected outbreakof the new variant"Cicada," but there isa trendof increasing patients after the periodof festivals, especially"Songkran," requiring close monitoring.
On 28 March 2026, the Facebook pageof the Epidemiology Division, Department of Disease Control, posted that currently... the situation remains stable.
At present, the COVID-19 situation in Thailand remains at a normal level, with no signs of a large-scale outbreak and no detection of new variants trending on social media, such as "Cicada," within the country. However, COVID-19 has not disappeared but tends to shift into seasonal outbreaks.
Data over the past 3–4 years show a fairly consistent pattern: case numbers typically rise after festival periods or times of heavy travel, especially after Songkran, when there is significant population movement domestically and internationally, increasing the chance of introducing the virus into communities.
Surveillance data from the Epidemiology Division between 1 January and 27 March 2026 show a cumulative 1,926 cases (incidence rate of 2.9 per 100,000 population) with no reported deaths. Most patients are aged 30–39, followed by those 60 and older, then 20–29 years old.
Recently, the outbreak characteristics differ from earlier large-scale waves, as most cases exhibit mild symptoms, the public health system remains able to cope, and there is no widespread impact on healthcare services.
A key focus moving forward is not only monitoring case numbers but also variant surveillance, especially the risk of introducing new variants from abroad after increased travel periods.
In summary, although the current situation remains controllable, COVID-19 is still likely to cause small seasonal outbreaks following major travel periods, necessitating continuous close monitoring.
