Sad News: Southern Dusky Leaf Monkey Falls from Power Line After Being Paralyzed by Electric Shock

It is saddening that officials at Ton Nga Chang Wildlife Sanctuary found a Southern Dusky Leaf Monkey electrocuted by a high-voltage power line, resulting in partial paralysis of its hind legs.

On 12 May 2026, reports indicated that a Facebook pageof Ton Nga Chang Wildlife Sanctuaryposted images and a message saying that this morning there was a sad incident involving a wild animal now rarely seen alive, when officials at Ton Nga Chang Wildlife Sanctuary found a Southern Dusky Leaf Monkey an adult male that had fallen from a power line accompanied by the loud sound of a transformer exploding. The electric shock caused the monkey to become partially paralyzed in its hind legs, unable to walk normally. Witnesses contacted staff at Ton Nga Chang Wildlife Breeding Station, who took the monkey in for care and treatment.

Regarding the Southern Dusky Leaf Monkey, its scientific name is Trachypithecus obscurus, a mammal species classified in the Cercopithecidae family.

It is distinguished by white rings around its eyes resembling glasses, and newborn infants have bright golden yellow or orange fur that darkens to gray when fully grown. Their behavior includes living in groups and mainly eating leaves, fruits, and young shoots. They are usually found high in the treetops and tend to be cautious, though in some areas they are accustomed to tourists.

Additionally, the Southern Dusky Leaf Monkey plays an important ecological role by dispersing forest plant seeds, helping to maintain forest health and natural regeneration.
