Micro Blue Moon on Visakha Bucha Night Emphasizes It Does Not Mean Blue Moon

"Micro Blue Moon" On Visakha Bucha night, 31 May 2026, it is reiterated that astronomically this does not mean "Blue Moon"

On 31 May 2026, Facebook pageNARIT, the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand, posted a message stating, "To reiterate, Blue Moon does not mean a blue-colored moon. Astronomically, a Blue Moon refers to the second full moon within a month, a phenomenon that occurs infrequently.

Normally, the moon's orbit around Earth takes about 29.5 days, while the calendar month is 30 to 31 days. This causes some months to have two full moons—one at the beginning and one at the end—which is rare, similar to the English phrase 'Once in a blue moon,' meaning something that happens rarely or infrequently.

This Blue Moon coincides with the moon being at its farthest point from Earth in the year (Micro Full Moon), hence the name 'Micro Blue Moon.' So, what will we see on Visakha Bucha night? We will see a full moon that appears slightly smaller than usual and retains its normal color—not blue—just like a typical Micro Full Moon."
