Meteorological Department Explains Why Philippines 7.8 Earthquake Did Not Cause Tsunami Impact in Thailand

The Meteorological Department reveals why the large 7.8 magnitude earthquake in the Philippines did not impact Thailand with shaking or tsunami.

On 8 June 2026 GMT+7, the Meteorological Department explained the recent large 7.8 earthquake in the Philippines earlier this morning and why it did not affect Thailand. They stated that although the earthquake near the Mindanao Islands, Philippines, was strong at magnitude 7.8, Thailand did not experience shaking or tsunami risk.

This is because the earthquake's energy dissipates over distance, and the epicenter is about 8,000 kilometers from Thailand. Additionally, several large islands like Sumatra, Borneo, and the Philippine archipelago act as barriers that reduce and block the energy of the waves.
