Assailants detonated a bomb while volunteer officials were escorting a drug patient to the hospital on Road 4017 between Ban Klang and Ban Nok, Panare District, Pattani Province, resulting in one death and one injury.
On 17 June at 09:30, Lieutenant Colonel Roengsak Chatsuksiridet, Deputy Investigation Officer of Panare Police Station, Pattani Province, received a report of an explosion causing injuries and a fatality on Road 4017 between Ban Klang and Ban Nok, Village No. 5, Ban Klang Subdistrict, Panare District, Pattani. Upon notification, he deployed forces to the scene along with Police Colonel Aphakorn Wirupak-Arak, the commander, and teams specializing in bomb disposal and forensic investigation.
At the scene, a village road was found with one yellow motorcycle parked by the roadside, belonging to a volunteer official. Bomb fragments were scattered nearby and collected as evidence. The injured were taken to Panare Hospital; identified as Mr. Maleeki Jaewa, 33, and Mr. Ilyas Dola, 41, who later died.
Initial investigation revealed that prior to the incident, six volunteer officials from the Ban Nok Subdistrict protection unit in Panare District traveled on three motorcycles to pick up a drug patient from a house in Village No. 1, Ban Nok Subdistrict, to take for treatment at Panare Hospital. The patient's mother had notified the village headman on 16 June 2026 to coordinate the pickup, scheduled for the morning of the incident.
While transporting the patient to the hospital, the convoy consisted of five motorcycles: the first carried two volunteer officials who were injured and killed; the second had two volunteers; the third and fourth were motorcycles of relatives, the patient, and the village headman; and the fifth was a motorcycle with two volunteers bringing up the rear.
When the convoy reached the explosion site, assailants remotely detonated a 5-kilogram homemade bomb hidden by the roadside, causing a powerful blast and widespread shrapnel dispersion. The first motorcycle, carrying two volunteer officials, was hit, resulting in injury and death.
Officials, relatives, the patient, and the village headman in the convoy immediately sought cover, while reinforcements arrived to control the situation and transport the injured to the hospital.
Following the incident, authorities secured the area to ensure safety, barring unauthorized persons from approaching. Drones were deployed to survey the surroundings to assist bomb disposal and forensic teams. Initial findings identified the explosive as a 5-kilogram homemade device.
Police, military, and administrative officials spread forces to surround the area, conducting inspections and collecting evidence. They reviewed CCTV footage and interviewed witnesses to track down the perpetrators for legal action. Authorities believe the attack was carried out by insurgent groups active in the area.
