Report on Near-Simultaneous Earthquakes in Venezuela and Japan Confirms No Impact on Thailand

The Department of Mineral Resources reported near-simultaneous earthquakes in two countries, Venezuela and Japan, confirming no impact on Thailand yet affected the region.

On 25 June 2026, the Facebook page"Disaster Geology Operations Center, Department of Mineral Resources"posted a report about earthquakes occurring in two countries within a close time frame, stating that

  • Offshore earthquake magnitude 6.9, Japan

On 25 June 2026 at 05:30 Thai time, an offshore earthquake measuring 6.9 occurred at a depth of 50.9 kilometers. The epicenter was located off the coast of Honshu Island, Japan, about 35 kilometers northeast of Kuji city, Iwate Prefecture. This qualifies as a fairly strong earthquake.

The cause was the Pacific Plate subducting beneath the North American Plate.

The tremors were widely felt by the public. Initially, no damage was reported, but some train lines were temporarily closed for safety. This earthquake did not impact Thailand (Sources: USGS, Volcano Discovery).

  • Onshore earthquakes measuring 7.5 and 7.2, Venezuela

On 25 June 2026 at 05:05 Thai time, a magnitude 7.5 onshore earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers. Shortly before, at 05:04, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck at 21.9 kilometers deep. The epicenters were in Yaracuy state in northwestern Venezuela, classified as major earthquakes.

These were caused by right-lateral strike-slip movement along the Bocono Fault, resulting in multiple building collapses and damage to residences.

It is initially expected that many fatalities have occurred. Government agencies are actively providing aid and evacuating people to safe areas. The tremors were felt as far as Colombia but had no impact on Thailand (Sources: USGS, CNN, BBC, and Department of Mineral Resources). Further details will be reported as available.
