The news image showing smoking inside a police station meeting room while a suspect was detained clearly violates the law under the Tobacco Product Control Act of 2017 and the Ministry of Public Health’s announcement designating public places, workplaces, and government offices—including police stations—as entirely smoke-free zones, whether in meeting rooms, investigation rooms, or surrounding areas.
For penalties, smokers violating smoke-free zones face fines up to 5,000 baht. Owners, operators, or managers who neglect to publicize, prohibit, or allow smoking in their areas face fines up to 3,000 baht.
Strict enforcement of the law, especially in government offices and law enforcement locations, is a crucial starting point and model to protect public health and officials from the dangers of secondhand smoke."
