The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) announced an adjustment to the progressive residential electricity rates, effective from the new billing cycle starting September 2026, removing public lighting fees from the bills.
On 18 Aug 2026 GMT+7, reporters reported that MEA announced revisions to the progressive rate electricity tariffs for residential users, following the Energy Regulatory Commission’s resolution on 5 Aug 2026 GMT+7, effective from the September 2026 billing cycle onward.
This revision removes the public electricity service charges from the electricity bills, so consumers no longer bear these costs through their bills.
The new electricity rates reflecting these changes are divided into two categories as follows:
Electricity usage is charged cumulatively by tier, not applying the highest rate to all units consumed. The rates stated are for energy charges only and exclude service fees, fuel adjustment charges (Ft), and value-added tax.
Additionally, the definition of residential electricity users has been expanded to include residences, temples, meditation centers, religious establishments of all faiths, and continuous residential use without permanent household registration, according to specified terms and conditions.
