Dr. Seri updates the risk situation of very heavy rain, flash floods, and community flooding from 24-26 September 2026, emphasizing that the Chao Phraya and Tha Chin river basins will not repeat the great flood disaster of 2011.
On 23 September 2026, Associate Professor Dr. Seri Supharat, Director of the Climate Change and Disaster Center at Rangsit University and Vice President of the National Disaster Warning Council Foundation, posted an update on areas at risk of flash floods and community flooding during 22-26 September 2026.
He stated that the Climate and Disaster Center at Rangsit University and the National Disaster Warning Council Foundation have updated the risk situation for very heavy rain, flash floods, and community flooding from 24-26 September. Areas with high risk and severity (see attached map) are shown in orange within a blue frame.
The center assessed areas at risk of flash floods and community waterlogging within the blue frame (resolution: 600 meters for larger blue frame areas, 80 meters for smaller red frame areas) based on accumulated heavy rainfall exceeding 300 mm (within the blue frame) between 24-26 September 2026. This has an approximate 5% chance of occurring, or is equivalent to rainfall accumulation seen once in over 20 years.
For the central region in the Chao Phraya and Tha Chin basins, a great flood like that of 2011 will not occur because upstream floodwater volume is about 40% lower. However, heavy rainfall during 24-26 September may cause waterlogging in communities or flooding awaiting drainage, varying by each area's management capacity.
