Pata Zoo announced sad news. "Grandpa Dam Ngao" the legendary Asiatic black bear, known as the longest-lived in Thailand, has passed away after living beyond the typical lifespan under the zoo's care for over 40 years.
On 13 Oct 2026 GMT+7, many were saddened when the Facebook pagePata Zooposted news of the passing of "Grandpa Dam Ngao," an elderly Asiatic black bear cared for by the zoo for more than 40 years. The message stated that
Pata Zoo officially opened in 1984 and introduced many exotic animal species, including a pair of adorable young Asiatic black bears, which drew public interest as one of Asia's most dangerous large wild animals.
In the past, the zoo had a dedicated section for three bear species: 1. Polar bears, 2. Sun bears, and 3. Asiatic black bears (the subject here).
The two Asiatic black bears lived together for many years, outliving other species that passed away naturally. About 10 years ago, due to old age, the pair was moved to an animal sanctuary in Nonthaburi province.
Over time, the team noticed signs suggesting the bears were nearing life's end, but later they showed remarkable mental strength and physical improvement, prompting a staff meeting to reconsider their care.
On 8 Apr 2025, management ordered the elder bears to be returned to Pata Zoo, establishing a clearly marked "Elderly Bear Residence" to provide closer care and educate visitors. Records showed that
"These two elder Asiatic black bears at Pata Zoo are the longest-lived of their kind in Thailand, having been under the zoo's care for over 40 years."
They were affectionately nicknamed internally as Dam Ngao and Dam Dan.
For over a year, both Grandpa Dam Ngao and Grandma Dam Dan showed improving health despite their species' typical lifespan of 20 to 25 years.
On the morning of 10 Oct 2026, Grandpa Dam Ngao showed difficulty standing but still ate. The team suspected footpad inflammation and was treating him.
However, on the morning of 12 Oct 2026, Grandpa Dam Ngao clearly weakened, refused food, and showed labored breathing, passing away late that morning.
He leaves behind sorrow among the staff and a legacy as the oldest Asiatic black bear in Thailand.
Though Grandpa Dam Ngao has passed, his long life beyond typical expectations is a source of pride for Pata Zoo’s team, who gained valuable knowledge on prolonged animal care for the benefit of other animals under their care.
Farewell, Grandpa Dam Ngao.
You remain a cherished memory and symbol of longevity at this sky-high zoo forever.
