Orionid Meteor Shower Expected to Peak at 20 Meteors per Hour Overnight Oct 21-22, 2026

The Orionid meteor shower will be visible overnight on October 21, continuing into the early morning of October 22, 2026, with an expected peak average rate of 20 meteors per hour this year.

On October 21, 2026, the fan pageNARIT, the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand, posted the following message: From the night of October 21 to the early morning of October 22, 2026, the Orionid meteor shower will occur (with moonlight interference).

The Orionid meteor shower (Orionids) also known as the "Orion constellation meteor shower" originates from numerous dust particles and small debris left behind by Halley's Comet (1P/Halley). As Earth moves through the comet's orbital path, its gravity attracts this debris, causing it to rub against Earth's atmosphere, igniting and producing bright streaks resembling fireballs radiating from the Orion constellation, creating a beautiful fiery display across the sky.

This year, the peak meteor rate is expected to average about 20 meteors per hour. On the night of October 21 into the early morning of October 22, 2026, the radiant point of the meteor shower will be located near the arms of the Orion constellation, appearing in the east around 10:30 p.m., then gradually rising to the middle of the sky, allowing viewing throughout the night until dawn.

(Note: Moonlight will cause interference from early evening until about 2:30 a.m.)
