Department of Disaster Prevention Advises 3 Tips to Prevent Lightning Hazards and Handle Emergencies During Thunderstorms

"Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation" (DDPM) advises three scenarios to prevent hazards "lightning" and to handle emergencies during "thunderstorms"

On 3 Nov 2026, Mr. Nirat Pongsitthaworn, Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), stated that thunderstorms often come with lightning that can cause serious danger to life and property, especially for those in open areas or near buildings and conductive objects. For safety, DDPM recommends tips for preventing lightning hazards, surviving, and properly assisting victims as follows.

  • When outdoors (seek shelter immediately)

Upon hearing thunder, quickly enter a sturdy building or take refuge in a car with doors and windows fully closed. Avoid holding metal objects and stay away from large trees, utility poles, billboards, and isolated structures, as they pose higher lightning risks. If no shelter is available, crouch down with feet together, head lowered, minimize ground contact, and do not lie flat on the ground.

  • When indoors (beware of electric hazards)

Keep doors and windows tightly closed, avoid using electrical appliances and devices connected to external wiring, landline phones, and avoid bathing, washing dishes, or touching faucets and metal pipes. It is advisable to unplug electrical devices before storms occur.

  • If you find a lightning strike victim (assist immediately)

Victims struck by lightning carry no residual electric current and can be safely assisted immediately. First, ensure the area is safe, then move the victim to a safe place and check responsiveness and breathing. If unconscious and not breathing, call 1669 and begin CPR immediately. Use an AED if available, following the device’s instructions.

DDPM urges the public to closely monitor weather forecasts and warnings from relevant agencies, avoid outdoor activities during thunderstorms, and strictly follow safety guidelines.
