In the past week, many Instagram users have likely felt puzzled by a mysterious little icon appearing at the top right of their chat screens. Though created as a new feature, for many this element feels like an unnecessary addition that raises the question: why does this small window exist, and why is it placed in such an annoyingly visible spot?
'Instant' is the name of this troublesome feature. At first glance, it resembles the Story camera, but its aspect ratio and usage give a vibe similar to the Locket Widget app, which was once very popular among Gen Z. Its key function is to share unfiltered live camera photos instantly, highlighting the user’s ‘real’ moments.
Functionally, Instant does not show who viewed the photos but allows friends to respond with sticker reactions. All images are saved in a gallery similar to Stories or Posts but are confined within a rounded rectangular frame. While some users find this cute, many see it as a disturbance they struggle to disable.
This irritation likely stems from poor placement. When we intend to open chat to communicate, the strange Instant design acts like a notification button that nags the brain to check it just to make it disappear. Yet it persists, creating visual clutter that reduces focus and hampers effective conversation.
When the brain is interrupted in a space meant for 'focus'
Imagine typing on a task while secretly playing a small music video on your screen. Though you try to concentrate, the moving images draw your attention little by little, causing the work to drag on frustratingly beyond schedule.

Similarly, on Instagram, the chat screen is a space entered with clear intent—whether to read, reply, or discuss important matters. But Instant’s presence, focused solely on image communication, is an incongruous addition that forces the brain to rapidly switch perception modes.
Though Instant appears as just a small circle, many users feel it has stolen their smooth experience. As focus diminishes, the ‘cute’ vibe Instagram aims for turns into visual clutter and annoyance for many.
Lingering design frustration
In website or app design, user attention is a valuable, limited resource. Designers cannot cram everything in arbitrarily, as disorganized information reduces responsiveness and overloads cognitive capacity—known as Cognitive Load.
Similarly, Instagram’s placement of a photo feature in the chat window confuses the brain’s processing. Instead of concentrating on communication, users face an irrelevant photo button intruding in the typing space.
Moreover, this button acts as a call-to-action with its prominent circle resembling a notification. Instinctively, our brains treat this as a task needing clearance. When it remains persistent and cannot be removed, this design frustration turns into user annoyance.
Instagram’s insistence on content creation even within chat
In fact, Instagram Instants have succeeded in prompting immediate user reactions—metrics favored by the platform’s algorithm to boost content visibility.
But behind these success numbers lies user fatigue. This feature turns the private chat space into one where users feel pressured to create content constantly. What was once a quiet corner for communication now traps users in a cycle of ‘creating and consuming’ even within their message boxes.
