
Recurring accidents on Rama 2 Road: How many more lives must be lost? The latest tragedy involved a concrete beam and crane collapse killing two people. In just the last two years, dozens of construction-related accidents have occurred.
Rama 2 Road, one of the main routes to southern Thailand, stretches 84 kilometers and has been nicknamed the “Road of Seven Generations” due to construction lasting over 50 years. The road has undergone continuous expansion and new construction, causing frequent traffic jams and accidents related to construction activities and road structures.
Most recently, on 15 Jan 2026 at approximately 09:11, another tragic accident occurred when a concrete beam and construction crane from an elevated highway project—Highway No. 82, Bang Khun Thian-Ban Phaeo elevated route, section Ekachai-Ban Phaeo—collapsed onto the road, crushing vehicles below. Initial reports indicate 5 injured and 2 fatalities, underscoring the ongoing safety crisis in construction.
Information from the Consumer Council which collected data and statistics on its online news website shows that from 1 Jan 2024 to 31 Aug 2025, there were 9 construction-related accidents on Rama 2 Road resulting in at least 14 deaths and over 44 injuries.
Meanwhile, data from the Department of Highways (DOH) reports that on Highway No. 35, section Dao Khanong to Wang Manao—also known as Rama 2 Road—from 2018 until March 2025, there have been over 2,500 accidents, with 143 deaths and 1,441 injuries.

This incident occurred at kilometer 34 inbound on Rama 2 Road, in front of Viphavaram Hospital, Moo 2, Bang Krachao Subdistrict, Mueang Samut Sakhon District. A slab from a U-turn bridge fell onto the road, crushing several vehicles. Two people died: a worker who fell from the bridge and a passenger in one of the affected cars.
This happened on the median strip as part of the Rama 2 - Ban Phaeo expressway project, opposite the Snake Goddess Shrine, outbound Rama 2 Road, Samae Dam Subdistrict, Bang Khun Thian District, Bangkok. A concrete beam measuring 3 meters wide and 10 meters long fell on a 54-year-old Thai worker, killing him. Four cars sustained minor damage.
This occurred at kilometer 21+600, Moo 2, Kok Krabue Subdistrict, Mueang Samut Sakhon District. A concrete segment and launching gantry crane—parts and equipment used for the elevated highway construction project on Highway No. 82, Bang Khun Thian-Ban Phaeo elevated route, Ekachai-Ban Phaeo section 1—collapsed while joining concrete beams. Four workers died (2 Thai and 2 Myanmar nationals) and 10 were injured.
This happened at kilometer 21+600 in Moo 1 and Moo 2, Kok Krabue Subdistrict, Mueang Samut Sakhon District. A concrete beam and construction crane for the elevated road project on Highway No. 82, Bang Khun Thian-Ban Phaeo elevated route, Ekachai-Ban Phaeo section 1, fell from their installation site, causing 6 deaths—1 Thai worker and 5 foreign workers—and 24 injuries.
