
Spotlight on Songkran 2026 landmarks bustling across Thailand. The government expects at least 6.5 million Thai and international tourists to join the water festivities, generating 30 billion baht in economic circulation.
Today (15 Apr) Ms. Sabida Thaiset, Minister of Culture, revealed that Thailand's Songkran festival in 2026 has attracted overwhelming interest from tourists worldwide. Big 7 Travel, a leading online travel media based in the United Kingdom, ranked it as the number one global destination in April 2026.
It is forecasted that during the Songkran 2026 festival, at least 6.5 million participants, both Thai and foreign, will take part across the country, generating no less than 30 billion baht in economic turnover. The Tourism Authority of Thailand stated this figure represents a 6% increase compared to the same period last year.
For the international market, about 500,000 foreign tourists are expected to visit Thailand, a 4% increase, generating approximately 8.1 billion baht. Meanwhile, the domestic market is anticipated to see 5,963,000 Thai visitors, a 7% rise.
The Songkran 2026 statistics from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's Office of Culture, Sports, and Tourism report attendance figures at 94 Songkran event sites across Bangkok. The total attendance reached 3,145,215 people. Just yesterday (14 Apr), over 1,526,809 people participated, with the six most popular water play spots being:
1. Songkran Siam 2026 at Siam Square with a cumulative attendance of 1,096,607 people.
2. Silom Road's Silom Songkran Splash Out with Thai Culture event, with 652,974 attendees (held 12-14 Apr).
3. ICONSIAM THAICONIC Songkran Celebration 2026, attracting 603,752 participants.
4. Tha Maharaj Water Festival 2026, celebrating water culture and Thai traditions, with 298,276 attendees.
5. Khao San Road Songkran event with 105,925 participants.
6. Khlong Toei District's Maha Songkran World Event with 75,180 people attending.
Meanwhile, Chiang Mai province is hosting lively Songkran activities at several popular landmarks such as Tha Phae Gate, Nimman Road, Ton Yang Road, and around the moat city area, including Rin Kham-Maya where, at 9:00 PM yesterday (14 Apr), more than 100,000 people gathered to watch concerts and take part in Songkran water celebrations. Police from Chang Phueak station, nearby precincts, and local authorities mobilized fully to maintain order.
It is expected that Songkran in Chiang Mai will generate tourism revenue in the billions of baht. Reports indicate hotel bookings are at approximately 70-80%, sustaining the tourism sector amid high oil prices and economic impacts from the Iran war.
at "Khao Niao Road" the famous Songkran landmark in Khon Kaen province. On 14 April, the second night of the "Human Wave" event took place, chaired by Minister of Culture Ms. Sabida Thaiset. Over 50,000 tourists participated, creating a human wave from the Khon Kaen city gate stage down to the end of Tiao Hong intersection, spanning more than 1.5 kilometers amid cheering crowds and lively music. The "Human Wave" Today (15 Apr), Ms. Natthiya Tansuk, President of the Khon Kaen Tourism and MICE Association, revealed that before Songkran there were concerns about oil prices, the ongoing war's effects, and the global economic situation, but hotel bookings in all areas
have exceeded 80%. Public transportation and tourist accommodations in Khon Kaen city and province are fully booked through 16 April. However, annual estimates project local spending during Songkran to be no less than 1.3 billion baht. Despite earlier forecasts of 800-900 million baht due to various external factors, with nearly 100,000 tourists participating daily, confidence is high that revenue will surpass 1.3 billion baht this year.
Foreign tourists flock to join Songkran in "Phuket" Today (15 Apr), Ms. Lalida Pertwiwatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that the Southern Songkran festival remains a key destination, especially in Phuket province. Between 11–15 April, approximately 149,690 tourists are expected, generating over 4.08 billion baht. Meanwhile, Songkhla and Nakhon Si Thammarat provinces continue to buzz with activity, welcoming both domestic and international visitors, positively impacting the wider local economy.
