Revealing the new electricity rate formula: a tiered payment system with the first 200 units at 3 baht, expected to begin billing in June 2026. The Energy Minister declared that those using no more than 400 units will pay 10-20% less.
The government is preparing to restructure electricity rates, announced this morning (28 Apr 2026). Mr. Eknat Promphan, Minister of Energy, disclosed that due to the impact of the Middle East war causing imported gas prices— the main cost of electricity production—to rise, measures have been introduced to reduce electricity prices for all 23 million households nationwide, applying a tiered payment system. The first 200 units will be priced affordably at no more than 3 baht per unit, meaning all consumers using up to 200 units will see their electricity bills reduced by 20%.
Every household will benefit from the first 200 units at 3 baht. Usage exceeding 200 units will be charged at a slightly increased special rate, resulting in about a 10% discount. These two groups cover more than 20 million households, over 90% of users. For those consuming more than 400 units, the amount beyond that will be charged at another rate. It is assured that everyone will have lower electricity costs overall, roughly equal to the average.
Additionally, there will be promotion of rooftop solar usage, with the government facilitating faster procedures and providing funding sources for loans at installment rates cheaper than electricity bills. This is expected to take effect in the June 2026 billing cycle, when consumers will pay under the new rates.
. The new electricity rate formula will be as follows:
1. The first 200 units will be priced affordably at no more than 3 baht per unit. Consumers using up to 200 units will receive a 20% discount, covering about 15.4 million households.
2. Units 201 to 400 will be charged at the normal rate of 3.95 baht per unit, covering about 4.6 million households.
3. Units above 401 will await a new rate adjustment, covering about 3.2 million households.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Ratchada Thanadirek, spokesperson for the Office of the Prime Minister, stated following the Cabinet meeting that the Cabinet approved the National Energy Policy Committee (NEPC) to proceed with the national energy agenda, which will be discussed in the meeting tomorrow (29 Apr 2026).
The household electricity rate for the first 200 units will not exceed 3 baht per unit. For those using more than 200 units, consideration is being given to promoting rooftop solar use, with government incentives including low-interest loans, streamlined buy-back processes, and tax deductions.
Regarding concerns about whether electricity rates will increase for users consuming over 200 units, the government and Ministry of Energy are reviewing measures to avoid impacting this group and will provide details to reassure all citizens.
