Safe Rest Stops for Driving from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai During Long Holidays

Driving north, especially to Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai, typically takes 9-11 hours. Finding safe "rest stops" is very important. These stops mainly fall into three types: Department of Highways rest areas (the safest), large gas stations, and tent camping or designated parking areas for sleeping.

Here is a guide listing rest stops along the route from Bangkok northwards.

1. Early route section (Nakhon Sawan - Kamphaeng Phet).

If you leave Bangkok in the evening and begin to feel tired around here, it’s recommended to rest before entering the mountainous area.

  • PTT gas station bypassing Nakhon Sawan city: It has a spacious area, 24-hour shops, and many vehicles parked overnight; it’s not isolated.
  • Kamphaeng Phet Highway District Office: Located beside the main road with staff on duty 24 hours, clean restrooms, and parking spaces specifically arranged for resting overnight.

2. Mid-route section (Tak - Thoen - Lampang), a popular spot.

This is the exact halfway point. Many choose to rest here before driving up Khun Tan mountain.

  • Tak Highway District Office No. 1: Offers a "rest stop for people and vehicles" project with free coffee, drinking water, and restrooms.
  • Bhumibol Dam rest stop (Tak): Inside the dam area, there is a zone safer and quieter than the roadside area.
  • PT Max Camp (Thoen/Lampang): The new PT stations have Max Camps with showers and relaxation rooms specifically for drivers, very convenient for those sleeping in their vehicles.

3. Near Chiang Mai (Lamphun - Chiang Mai).

  • Doi Ti (Lamphun): Several large gas stations before entering Chiang Mai serve as the last rest points before the city.
  • Overnight parking in Chiang Mai (for RVs/Car Camping): * Mae Wang National Park: Offers tent camping areas and parking for overnight rest.
    • Doi Pui: For those wanting to sleep in the cool mountain air, you can drive past the city and park overnight at the Doi Pui tent camping site.

4. Route to Chiang Rai (Phayao - Mae Sai).

If taking the route via Nakhon Sawan - Phitsanulok - Phrae - Phayao.

  • Mae Sai Highway District (Chiang Rai): About 10 km before Mae Sai district, this rest stop offers stunning million-baht views, restrooms, and staff on duty.
  • Rim Kwan Phayao: There is a rest stop with a pleasant and safe atmosphere near community areas.
  • Chom Tawan Camping Ground (Mae Suai): For Car Camping enthusiasts wanting to sleep among sea mist before entering Chiang Rai city.

 Safety tips:

  1. Crack the window: If sleeping in your vehicle, leave the window slightly open about 1-2 cm for ventilation (or use magnetic insect screens designed for cars).
  2. Choose well-lit but not crowded spots: Park under lights at gas stations or near police or highway staff posts.
  3. Turn off the engine: Avoid running the engine while resting to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
