Songkran 2026: Water Pouring Ceremony of Luang Pho Phra Sai, the Faith Power of the Mekong Basin – Major Event Dates

Songkran 2026, the grand Isan Songkran festival in Nong Khai 2026: "Songkran with White Checkered Cloth Honoring Luang Pho Phra Sai" – the faith power of the Mekong River basin.

Prepare for the biggest festival in Nong Khai, "Songkran with White Checkered Cloth Honoring Luang Pho Phra Sai" for the year 2026 at Wat Pho Chai, a royal monastery. Experience the merit-making tradition, sacred water pouring, and spectacular performances lasting six days and nights.

The 2026 Songkran queen is named "Raksasadevi." She is depicted standing atop a warah (mythical creature), gathering crops. The harvest is said to be partially bountiful and partially lost, reflecting mixed fortunes.

Legend and Beliefs: The Water Pouring Ceremony of "Luang Pho Phra Sai" during Songkran 2026.

Luang Pho Phra Sai is a seated Buddha statue in the Mara Vichai posture, cast in glowing gold with exquisite beauty. According to legend, it was created by the three royal daughters of the Lan Chang king (Phra Suk, Phra Serm, and Phra Sai). During its transfer across the Mekong River to the Thai side, a miraculous event occurred, establishing Luang Pho Phra Sai at Wat Pho Chai to this day.

Beliefs Regarding the Water Pouring Ceremony.

People of Nong Khai and Laos believe that pouring water on Luang Pho Phra Sai symbolizes cleansing of misfortune and seeking blessings for peace, seasonal rains, and auspicious life.

Changes Over Time: From the "Original Statue" to the "Replica."

In the past, the original Luang Pho Phra Sai statue was brought down from the ubosot for city processions, allowing people to pour water directly. To conserve and preserve this centuries-old Buddhist art, the temple now uses a "replica statue" identical in appearance for parades and water pouring. This protects the original from damage caused by moisture and fragrant water chemicals.
