Bangkok Municipal Officials to Strictly Enforce Removal of Vendors Blocking Sidewalks at 10 Locations

Bangkok municipal officials are preparing to remove vendors blocking sidewalks at 10 locations across the city. Over a thousand vendors have been found violating regulations, with the highest number in the Phra Nakhon district. Strict enforcement will begin in mid-2024, aiming to complete the operation by the end of 2026.

Dr. Worachon Thavornpong, Deputy Director of the Bangkok Municipal Office, stated that they plan to remove vendors at dozens of locations, affecting over 1,000 vendors citywide who have set up stalls or shops blocking pedestrian pathways. Starting from mid-2024 until the end of 2026, it is expected that thousands of sidewalk vendors will be removed this year, restoring sidewalks for pedestrians as intended and strengthening the enforcement of related laws.

Currently, approval has been requested from traffic officers to collaborate across Bangkok. Additionally, approval has been sought for exemption points from the first 2025 meeting, covering 19 locations. Police approved only 4 points: one in Phasi Charoen district and three in Yan Nawa district.

Fifteen points were not approved, including seven in Phaya Thai district, seven in Bang Sue district, and one in Rat Burana district. The district offices will be notified to proceed with actions within their authority.

Meanwhile, a recent Bangkok committee meeting (Session 1/2026) reviewed previously rejected points and newly proposed locations as follows.

Of the original 12 points, 4 were approved and 8 were rejected: Khlong San district had 4 points (2 approved, 2 rejected); Chatuchak district had 2 points rejected; Din Daeng district had 1 approved point; Samphanthawong district had 4 rejected points; Ratchathewi district had 2 points (1 approved, 1 rejected).

All 5 newly proposed points in Phra Nakhon district were rejected.
