The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has launched commuter train services using the KIHA 40 and KIHA 48 models, which were received from Japan's JR East company. These trains have been refurbished with a modern look while preserving their classic charm to enhance the travel experience for Thai passengers.
Key upgrades to the trains include modifying the axle base from 1.067 meters to 1 meter to fit Thailand's standard gauge tracks, redesigning the exterior in white and red tones, replacing velvet seats with leather ones, adding conveniences, installing air conditioning to cool the entire train, and fully renovating the restrooms.
Starting today (20 Apr), the service operates on the Don Mueang–Ayutthaya–Don Mueang route with fares ranging from 30 to 50 baht. This connects travel between Bangkok and its suburbs conveniently for six months until 31 Oct, with six trains running daily from Monday to Friday.
The route includes eight stations and one halt: Don Mueang, Rangsit, Chiang Rak, Thammasat University Halt, Chiang Rak Noi, Khlong Phutsa, Bang Pa-in, Ban Pho, and Ayutthaya stations.
