Top 4 Household Appliances That Consume the Most Electricity and How to Use Them Efficiently

Which types of household electrical appliances consume the most electricity? Here are the top 4 and tips on how to use them efficiently.

A simple summary of how to manage your electricity bill effectively.

Saving electricity isn’t just about "turning off" devices but about "using them properly." Appliances can be grouped according to their power consumption as follows:

Group 1: "High-Power, Urgent Mode" – extremely high electricity consumption.

This group consumes the highest electricity per hour because they need energy for heating or have powerful motors.

  • Water heater: 13.5 – 23.5 baht per hour.

  • Vacuum cleaner: 6 – 8 baht per hour.

  • Air fryer: 3.5 – 6.44 baht per hour.

  • Iron: 3.5 – 10 baht per hour.

  • Tip: Use only when necessary. "Use quickly and turn off quickly"; do not leave running while doing other activities.

Group 2: "Continuous Use Group" – steady electricity consumption.

These appliances are often used for long periods, which greatly impacts the total electricity bill.

  • Air conditioner: 2.5 – 6 baht per hour.

  • Tip: Set the temperature to 26–27°C and use a fan to help circulate cool air. This reduces compressor workload while keeping the room comfortably cool.

Group 3: "Batch Use Group" – consumes electricity per cycle.

Each use has a relatively high energy cost, so frequent use beyond necessity wastes electricity.

  • Washing machine: 2 – 8 baht per hour.

  • Tip: Don’t wash small loads. "Accumulate clothes to fill the drum" and wash once to maximize electricity and water efficiency.

Group 4: "Low Consumption Group" – low electricity use.

These appliances consume little electricity per hour but leaving them on all day and night unnecessarily can still increase your bill.

  • TV: 0.40 – 1 baht per hour.

  • Refrigerator: 0.30 – 0.40 baht per hour.

  • Fan: 0.15 – 0.25 baht per hour.

  • Air purifier: 0.09 – 0.20 baht per hour.

  • Tip: Although they consume little power, turn them off when not in use—except refrigerators, which should be organized internally to avoid overcrowding and allow good heat dissipation.
