Chong Chom - Or Samet Cambodia: Provocations Go Beyond Thai Border Issues

The "hot spot" along the Thai-Cambodian border economic corridor, namely the permanent border checkpoints of Chong Chom in Surin Province and Or Samet in Oddar Meanchey Province, often feature prominently in security news. This is especially true during 2025-2026, when the situation has become tense once again.

How many times have Cambodian soldiers provoked incidents?

Based on recorded data during the latest crisis, there have been at least four major provocations and confrontations affecting confidence:

  1. May 2026 (most recent): Eleven rounds of small arms fire from the Or Samet side entered Thai safe zone territory. It was claimed to be a training exercise but lacked prior coordination.

  2. April 2026: Cambodian armed forces encroached on the claimed area around "Chong Ray" to obstruct Thai officials' road improvement efforts.

  3. January 2026: Cambodian soldiers jointly established a checkpoint in an overlapping area near the Or Samet casino.

  4. August 2025: A verbal and close-quarters clash occurred between Thai ranger soldiers and Cambodian troops over the installation of barbed-wire fence posts.

Why is it specifically "Chong Chom - Or Samet"? Examining three main reasons.

Many wonder why tensions do not arise at other checkpoints but frequently flare at this particular location.

1. Geopolitical and military strategic factors.

Chong Chom is the natural passage along the Phanom Dong Rak mountain range with the flattest terrain. Controlling this point means controlling the "gateway" for troop movements into the interior areas of both countries.

2. The "casino" treasure and "gray capital".

On the Or Samet side, online gambling and casino businesses have rapidly expanded. Military provocations are sometimes used by local Cambodian officials as a tool to "demonstrate power" to protect the interests of multinational investors operating in the area.

3. The border line remains a "gray area".

Although there is MOU 43, the area around Chong Chom still has disputed zones where agreements have not been reached. Any construction movement is used to stir nationalist sentiments for Cambodia's internal political gain.

Summary of the situation for business operators.

Despite provocations, structurally, "Chong Chom" remains the most important strategic trade point in Surin Province. Investors should closely monitor updates from the Suranaree forces and the 2nd Army Region daily to assess the situation.
