Visakha Bucha Day is recognized worldwide as a significant Buddhist holy day, highly respected by Thai Buddhists. This year, Visakha Bucha Day 2026 falls on Sunday, 31 May. Many people wonder whether alcohol sales are officially banned on this day and what exceptions apply. We have summarized all the details in one place.
The answer is "prohibited" according to the Prime Minister’s Office Announcement on Specified Days Prohibiting Alcohol Sales (No. 3), B.E. 2558 (2015), which clearly states that alcohol sales are forbidden on five important religious days:
Magha Puja Day
Visakha Bucha Day
Asalha Puja Day
Buddhist Lent Day (Khao Phansa)
End of Buddhist Lent Day (Ok Phansa)
On Sunday, 31 May 2026, from 00:00 to 24:00 (from midnight Saturday to midnight Sunday), all shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues nationwide must stop selling all kinds of alcoholic beverages.
Although the regulation is strict, the law specifies some exceptions as follows:
Duty-Free Shops: Sales within international airport terminals (such as Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang) may continue as usual.
Personal Consumption: The law prohibits "selling" but does not prohibit "drinking" alcohol in private residences. If you already have alcohol at home, you may consume it legally (though it is advisable to drink modestly in observance of the holy day).
If any shop or establishment violates the prohibition by selling alcohol on Visakha Bucha Day, they will be prosecuted under the Alcohol Control Act B.E. 2551 (2008), Section 32.
Penalty: Imprisonment up to 6 months, or a fine up to 10,000 baht, or both.
