
His Majesty the King has bestowed the name “Queen Suthida” on a new rose variety in honor of Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana on the occasion of her 48th birthday anniversary.
His Majesty the King graciously bestowed the name “Queen Suthida” (Queen Suthida) on a new rose variety to honor Her Majesty the Queen on the auspicious occasion of her 48th birthday on 3 June 2026, and to bring good fortune to this new Thai rose. The rose was officially registered by the Department of Agriculture under the name Royal 3 (Rosa hybrid ‘Royal 3’) on 24 May 2024.
The naming was revealed during the 2/2569 meeting of the Royal Project Foundation Executive Committee on 16 June 2026 at Reception Building 606, Sanam Suea Pa, the Bureau of the Royal Household. The meeting was chaired by Privy Councillor General Kampanat Ruddith, with Privy Councillor Admiral Pongthep Nuthap, Lt. Col. Somchai Kanjanamani as vice chairman, and Dr. Rapeepat Chantrasriwong, Director-General of the Department of Agriculture, among other committee members and Royal Project support staff. The chairman informed the meeting of His Majesty’s gracious act.
This new rose variety's breeding began in 2018 by the Royal Project Foundation. It is a hybrid between the Ocean Song rose (mother) and the Nightingale rose (father), developed at the Khun Huai Haeng Research Unit, Royal Agricultural Station Inthanon, Chom Thong District, Chiang Mai. Its scientific name is Rosa 'Royal 3', belonging to the Rosaceae family, classified as an ornamental flowering plant.
Stem and branches: Upright stems with green thorns; new shoots are red. The plant height ranges from approximately 52 to 67 centimeters, with about 6 to 8 branches.
Leaves: Pinnately compound leaves with medium dark green color. Approximately 10 centimeters wide and 16 centimeters long. Leaf edges are slightly wavy, with a wedge-shaped base and serrated margins.
Flowers: Single flowers with layered petals. Buds are 1.4 to 1.8 centimeters wide, blooming to 7.0 to 9.7 centimeters in diameter. Sepals are elongated with pointed, slightly spread tips, numbering five. Petals are asymmetrical and round, about 4.4 centimeters wide and 4.5 centimeters long, with slightly wavy and scalloped edges. The petals curl slightly when fully open.
