The 2499 Legend: Daeng Baile vs. Pu Rabed Khuad — From Friendship to Rift... Fact or Fiction?

When speaking of the year 2499 BE (1956 CE), the film "2499 Antapan Khong Muang" made Thais believe that "Daeng Baile" and "Pu Rabed Khuad" were close friends turned deadly rivals locked in fierce battles. However, in reality, the story was not entirely like that.

Did "Daeng" and "Pu" really quarrel?

The answer is they were not mortal enemies in real life.

According to accounts from those present at the time, including Mrs. Jamnong, Daeng Baile’s mother, and several senior gangsters, they unanimously confirm that Daeng Baile and Pu Rabed Khuad never fought or harbored deep grudges as shown in the film.

In fact, they belonged to different groups with clearly defined territories.

Daeng Baile Controlled the Bangkok Noi area, specifically Baile Alley near Wat Sra Ket, known for his generosity and charisma.

Pu Rabed Khuad Controlled the Bang Lamphu area, known for his fierceness, toughness, and use of homemade bottle bombs.

The film’s depiction of conflict is a dramatization, combining the exploits of various gangs of that era into the character of Pu Rabed Khuad to heighten the story’s tension.

So, what caused gang conflicts in that era?

Although Daeng and Pu did not fight each other directly, conflicts between the "Baile Alley" gang and the "Bang Lamphu/other gangs" arose from three main factors.

1. Territorial expansion and honor: The year 2499 BE was a time when youth formed gangs by commercial districts; any intrusion or provocation could trigger immediate clashes.

1. Conflicts at festivals: Clashes often ignited at temple fairs or dance events, such as at Wat Sra Ket (Golden Mount Festival) or various dance halls. Even a mere "glare" or minor scuffle could spark major battles.

1. Politics and crackdowns: During Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat’s era, strict laws (Section 17) targeted gangsters, causing gangs to become suspicious of each other, leading to betrayals and reliance on powerful patrons for survival.

The final days of Daeng Baile and his gang members

The fate of the big gangsters of 2499 BE was far from glamorous; their lives ended in loss and tragedy.

Daeng Baile died at only 21 years old.

In reality, Daeng did not die from a shooting at a monk ordination party as depicted in the film.

Ultimately, Daeng died in a car accident in 1961 on the Chonburi-Pattaya road while traveling for work with a respected elder, closing the chapter on the famous gangster’s life at just 21 years old.

Pu Rabed Khuad

Pu died from a shooting during an internal gang clash triggered by conflicts over influence and profits, ending the legacy of the fierce Bang Lamphu gangster.

Dam Esso

Pu Rabed Khuad’s close friend and right-hand man was arrested during a major anti-gang crackdown and served a long prison sentence before living quietly after release.

Laem Singh

He died from gunfire due to betrayal and gang clashes during the period when dark influence was being suppressed.
