Cambodian Defense Ministry Shows Military Envoys from 12 Countries Damage at Preah Vihear, Claims Thai Attack

The Cambodian Ministry of Defense escorted military envoys to inspect damage at Preah Vihear, claiming Thai attacks caused severe impact on the World Heritage site. Prime Minister Hun Sen reposted the information immediately.

On 5 March 2026, the Cambodian Ministry of Defense coordinated a delegation of foreign military representatives from 12 countries to visit Preah Vihear Temple and its surrounding area in Serei M commune, Cheam Ksan district, Preah Vihear province, Cambodia. This World Heritage site, one of humanity’s most valuable, has been severely damaged by attacks.

Preah Vihear Temple has sustained damage, with claims that the attacks caused significant harm to the structures registered as a World Heritage site, including the temple and its surrounding environment.

According to the Ministry of Culture, documentation of damage collected from 7 to 27 December 2025 shows more severe destruction than recorded in July 2025. Photo and video evidence gathered by the national Preah Vihear agency during a documentation mission on 28 December 2025 identified 562 heavily affected sites within Preah Vihear. Cambodia asserts it is a law-abiding and highly responsible state.

F-16 fighter jets: The Royal Thai Air Force deployed fighter jets to conduct airstrikes against military bases and ammunition depots in Cambodia in response to heavy weapons fire.

Armed drones: There were reports of drone attacks targeting border strongholds.

Evacuation: Over 400,000 Thai residents from four border provinces (Buriram, Surin, Sisaket, and Ubon Ratchathani) were evacuated to temporary shelters.

Casualties: Both military personnel and civilians on both sides suffered significant casualties. Reports state at least 42 Thai soldiers were killed and over 500 wounded, while Cambodian losses were reportedly higher in personnel and equipment, including several destroyed T-55 tanks.
