Secretary of CRP Questions Qualifications of NBTC Chairman

The Secretary of the Committee for the Promotion of Democracy (CRP) questioned the qualification issues of the NBTC Chairman and expressed concern that a meeting of the former selection committee might be an attempt to whitewash the matter.

Today (8 May 2026) at 15:30, in front of the Government House, Mr. Metha Maskhao, Secretary of the Committee for the Promotion of Democracy (CRP), submitted a letter to the Prime Minister to raise questions and inform him about the legal issues regarding the lack of qualifications of Prof. Dr. Saran Boonbaichaiyapruck, Chairman of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC). The letter requested the Prime Minister to take action under his authority before CRP pursues legal proceedings for a ruling by the Constitutional Court. The letter included the following points.

Mr. Metha urged the Prime Minister, once aware of the facts, to promptly take correct legal action under his authority; otherwise, it would constitute neglect of duty and serious ethical misconduct, which could lead to removal from office if a Constitutional Court case is filed. Notably, individuals and organizations have already lodged complaints with the National Anti-Corruption Commission and the Ombudsman.

The organization of a meeting by the former NBTC chairman selection committee at the Senate Office may be a whitewash to find a way for the Prime Minister to avoid responsibility by shifting blame to the selection committee, whose authority has already expired. Currently, the fault lies with the Prime Minister and the Senate President for failing to act according to the law, and for attempting to protect each other by preventing a full meeting of the selection committee members today.

The key issue is how those involved have allowed the individual to remain in office when they should have legally forfeited their rights from the start. It is understood there may be conflicts of interest involving the Prime Minister across the past two administrations. Even though the facts are evident, the offense is complete and violates Section 180 of the Constitution. Therefore, legal action could be taken retrospectively against both individuals.
