Compensation for "teachers and students" after the shooting at Tepsirin School, Nonthaburi; OBEC initially announces 5,000–20,000 baht and confirms strict care measures are in place.
The shooting incident on the morning of 7 Aug 2026 at Tepsirin School in Nonthaburi caused fear among students and staff and deeply saddened the Thai public, as there were both injuries and fatalities. Reports state the perpetrator was a Grade 9 student who shot teachers and students before taking his own life. Initially, seven people died: three teachers, three students, and the perpetrator, with at least 15 others injured.
This incident has led the public following the news to question what measures will be taken to provide compensation and care for the students, staff, and families of the deceased going forward.
Thairath Online's special news team contacted Mr. Pichet Phophakdee, Secretary-General of the Basic Education Commission Office under the Ministry of Education, to inquire about the initial compensation measures for the affected students, staff, and families of the deceased.
Regarding safety policies at Tepsirin School in Nonthaburi, it is considered a school with a good security system, including over 200 CCTV cameras monitoring classrooms and various locations. The recent incident can thus be thoroughly investigated from multiple perspectives.
Students arriving in the morning were supervised by staff and several security guards. However, not every student's bag was checked before entering the school, as there are over 3,000 students enrolled, making such checks impractical and unnecessary under normal circumstances.
In terms of student supervision, measures must be arranged to ensure comprehensive care for all students. This links to the Ministry of Education’s first policy to reduce teachers' workload so they can focus more on student care.
The Education Minister emphasized that any budget to assist injured students or families of the deceased should be made available. For example, the deputy director of the school who died on duty may be honored, with established regulations ensuring the Ministry provides proper care in such cases.
Today (7 Aug 2026) at 15:15, Minister of Education Mr. Prasert Chandrarwongthong and OBEC Secretary-General Mr. Pichet Phophakdee visited the incident site and announced progress and compensation measures for affected students, staff, and families of the deceased.
Mr. Prasert stated he had initially spoken with the Tepsirin School director about the importance of psychological support for students and staff, as many were affected and receiving hospital treatment. Coordination has been made with Chulalongkorn University’s psychology faculty to provide mental health rehabilitation and assistance.
For injured students, orders have been given to ensure care at various hospitals, and full assistance is available if needed.
Regarding compensation policy, there will be financial aid for relief, funeral expenses, and special provisions for teachers who died while performing their duties. OBEC will initially provide 20,000 baht per deceased person, potentially with additional amounts. Injured individuals will receive 5,000–10,000 baht each. The Ministry of Education’s relief fund and the Permanent Secretary’s office will also contribute, and discussions with the government will explore further support options to maximize assistance.
