Thai rugby has a good opportunity to test their team at the first leg of the Asia Series 2026 from 26-31 August 2026 in the People's Republic of China before competing in the 20th Asian Games from 19 September to 4 October 2026 in Japan. The Rugby Football Association of Thailand is confident the women's team will win a medal.
The Thai national rugby sevens team preparing for the 20th Asian Games from 19 September to 4 October 2026 in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, continues to train with dedication. They receive ongoing support from the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) and the National Sports Development Fund.
Before participating in the 20th Asian Games, the Thai rugby team is scheduled to compete and test themselves at the first leg of the Asia Series 2026 from 26-31 August 2026 in the People's Republic of China. This tournament will feature leading Asian nations also competing at the Asian Games.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Kulthan Prauapmoha, President of the Rugby Football Association of Thailand, revealed the association has set a clear goal for this Asian Games: the Thai rugby team has a chance to win medals, especially the women's team, which they are confident will secure at least a bronze medal.
"At this Asian Games, the Thai rugby team will definitely win at least one bronze medal from the women's side. Our main rivals to defeat are Hong Kong and Kazakhstan. The men's team has been overhauled, with more than half the squad changed from the recent SEA Games champions. We have also called up two Thai-descended players from overseas to strengthen the team, aiming to finish in the top six," said Police Lieutenant Colonel Kulthan.
The president of the Rugby Football Association of Thailand added his thanks to the Sports Authority of Thailand for their consistent support of the association, including following and backing their international performances.
For rugby at the 20th Asian Games, the competition will be in the seven-a-side format, with two gold medals at stake. The women's tournament has eight teams divided into two groups. Thailand is in Group A with hosts Japan, Kazakhstan, and Singapore, while Group B includes China, Hong Kong, India, and Malaysia.
The men's tournament features 12 teams divided into three groups. Thailand is in Group B alongside host Japan, South Korea, and Kazakhstan. Group A consists of China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Uzbekistan, while Group C includes Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, and the Philippines.
